New for this year,our yearbook publishing company has elminated the minimum order required for books, so there will not be a large inventory of extra books as in previous years. If you have not ordered a 2010 book you must do it soon!!! A final count of book orders will be turned in by April 30th. There will be no orders taken online or at the school after this date. If you have ordered a book, Thank You!!


CTU will be on Fridays during advisement in the concessions area.

REMINDER: 15th of March. We will NOT have school on those 3 Fridays. The last full week of March will be spring break-3/23-3/26.

Elbert Public Library now has fines on DVD's and books. Fines accumulate until material that is overdue is returned. The overdue fine will be ten cents a day. Fines will not exceed $3.00 per item or the cost of the item if less than $3.00.

SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS who are interested in attending the Colorado Technical Arts Festival in Denver on Thursday, April 29th MUST SIGN UP IN TAFFY'S ROOM BY FRIDAY, APRIL 2ND. If there is enough interest, we will plan a field trip.

The High School Honors Institute College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado-Boulder is accepting applications from current sophomores & juniors for their summer program July 25-28, 2010. Students accepted to the institute will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of engineering workshops, laboratories, industry site visits and seminars. The program will also reflect the current interests and trends in our society. Participants will be house in a residence hall on the Boulder campus and will be able to explore campus life outside the academic challenges of the Institute. The fee for this year's Institute $375 which covers all costs of the Institute including room and board. A limited number of scholarships are available for those with financial need. Juniors...Memorial Hospital's Learning Link Career Observation Program provides serious minded high school students with the oppoutunity to receive firsthand experience in a hospital. Their public relations department even offers and opportunity for students interested in business, journalism or marketing rather than medicine. The student will spend two two-hour shifts per week for a full semester working directly within a hospital department and will receive high school credit for their commitment. Application deadline for the fall 2010 semester is April 2, 2010. See Taffy for more information and an application.

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors interested in the healthcare field are invited to attend Memorial Hospital's annual Career Day, Wednesday, May 5, 2010. This is a half-day shadowing event from 7:45 a.m.-12:00 noon. You must provide your own transportation to and from Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs (and you are expected to return for your afternoon classes). See Taffy for information and an application. Application deadline is March 19, 2010 and space is limited.

http://www.colorado.gov/benefits/ allows current and potential Colorado residents to check for eligibility for Colorado benefits (Medicaid, CHP+, food assistance and many more) for families that have lost jobs and/or health insurance. Check the website often as eligibility can change based on circumstances. The website is only partially up at this time, April is the estimated time to be fully functional including allowing folks to apply for benefits directly.

What is Early Access? House Bill 1021 defines the 4 or 5 yr. old child who may benefit from early access as a "highly gifted child". This child is academically gifted, socially and emotionally mature, in the top 2% of the gifted peer group, motivated to learn, and has exhaused the resources of preschool or home schooling. How does Early Access work? The process that parents must follow and complete: Feb. 1-Mar.1 Parents will contach the Pikes Peak BOCES G/T Coordinator and request Early Access for their child. The contact is Cyndi Swars at 719-622-2099. An information packet will be sent to parents w/ instructions for completion by March 20 and to be returned to G/T coordinator and request an interview to review the portfolio. Parents will have been notified about the placement determination by May 5. There is a flier available at the school office with a bit more information.

SOPHOMORE GIRLS...If you volunteer in your community, you may be eligible to apply for a $1500 academic award. The Women's Foundation of Colorado is looking to honor your academic and community service efforts. For more information and to apply for the award, visit www.wfco.org

Attention SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS...If you have an interest in a health career, Colorado Rural Health Scholars Program is offering an intensive academic program from June 6-June 26, 2010...AT NO COST TO YOU! (Your only expense is transportation to and from Denver at the beginning and end of the program.) There is a selection process as they limit the number of students accepted into the program, so you must act NOW! This is a great opportunity to get an all-expense paid educational and clinical experience in the medical field. Students are exposed to science and health careers through laboratories, colunteer experience at a local hospital, mentors and classes taught by University of Colorado medical school faculty. Students will aslo be educated on the process of applying to colleges and develop their note taking, writing and public speaking skills...all while enjoying the added benefit of living in a college dormitory at Regis University! Application materials must be postmarked by March 26, 2010. See Taffy for an application packet. We had an Elbert student who was selected for this program several years ago. She really enjoyed it and now has a great career in the medical field!

JUNIORS... the Navy ROTC Scholarship Program for 2011 graduates starts this spring. These scholarships are valued up to $180,000 each, depending on the school selected and can be used at oaver 160 of the top colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Scholarships cover full tuition, books, fees, uniforms & a monthly stipend of up to $400.00 for a Bachelor's Degree. Upon receiving a Bachelor's Degree, you will be commissioned as an Ensign (0-1) in the U.S. Navy. "Students have until the beginning of their sophomore year of college to leave the program without owin the Navy a penny." Each NROTC unit has a limited number of scholarships available each year and students who complete their applications early in the season have the best chance of attending their top chioce school on a scholarship. JUNIORS...if you are a college-bound student-athlete, you need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if you plan on participation in college athletics. Follow these easy steps: 1. Log on to the Eligibility Centers website at www.eligibilitycenter.org 2. Select the "Fall 2010 or After" icon 3. select the "New Account" tab at the top of the screen 4. Begin the registration process. This is something you MUST do to participate in college athletics, so don't put if off! Do it now!

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS... Are you looking for an ACT preparatory review? On March 20, 2010, DeVry is offering a FREE review session at DeVry University in Westminister. The review is from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with lunch provided from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Students MUST register prior to the event to attend. Sophomores and juniors...The Frontiers of Science Institure at UNC woulk like you to join them for an axciting summer of science exploration from June 13-July 23, 2010. You will have the oppotunity to experience educational, personal and social growth with peers how share similar interests as you. Particiapnts will spend six weeks immersed in a "learning for the thrill of learning" hands-on science cirriculum of biology, environmental, engineering, earth, space and physical sciences. You can earn UNC college credit and receive a scholarship to attend UNC. Priority application deadline is March 12, 2010. Extend deadline is April 16, 2010. Seconday ASHES will be Tuesday's in Mr. McCloskey's Spanish room, Wednesday's in Mr. Kaiser's Math room, and Thursday's in Mr. Culotta's English room. This will be for the entire 09-10 school year.

We need your favorite recipes for a cookbook fundraiser for the junior class. Bring or send in yours, grandmas, or any favorite recipe to the school and help the juniors make some money by selling your favorite recipe cookbook.

Congratulations to all of our Healthy Heart Supporters! Your hard work raised $1,072.25 for heart research. For this we can feel a great accomplishment. Way to go!!
The top thank you gift for Jump Rope heart is a tie between students. The two gifts being given are to Logan Pumroy and Clyde Bolejack @ $95.00 each. The top thank you gift for Hoops for Heart is being given to Devin Mayer @ $85.00.
We want to thank all of the teachers, support staff and students who helped in any way for their support and efforts before, during and yet to come as we will be distributing the thank you gifts when they come in April or May.
An SOS went out for help the day of our jump roping event. We want to thank everyone who came out to help us with our successful event as we help others help those who are in need. Stay heart healthy!
